چکیده

We consider preference relations over information that are monotone: more information is preferred to less. We prove that, if a preference relation on information about an uncountable set of states of nature is monotone, then it is not representable by a utility function. JEL Classification: C70, D11, D80

Revealed preferences and expectations: Evidence from ultimatum games

Behavior in the ultimatum game is modeled by exploiting standard nonparametric utility theory with the monotonicity assumption relaxed to a condition termed quasi-monotonicity. Proposers’ beliefs about responder behavior are likewise modeled nonparametrically, imposing only the restriction that proposers know responders have well-behaved, quasi-monotone preferences. Proposers are not assumed to...

Complementarity with incomplete preferences

This paper extends the formulation of complementarity in Milgrom and Shannon (1994) to the case of incomplete but acyclic preferences. It is shown that the problem can be reformulated as one with complete but intransitive preferences. In this case, quasi-supermodularity and single-crossing on their own do not guarantee either monotone comparative statics or equilibrium existence in pure strateg...

Ranking of non-linear qualitative decision preferences using copulas

In this paper we address the problem of option ranking in qualitative evaluation models. Current approaches make the assumptions that when qualitative data are suitably mapped into discrete quantitative data, they form monotone or closely linear tabular value functions. Although the power of using monotone and linear functions to model decision maker’’s preferences is impressive, there are many...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

Integrating the Results of Multimedia Sub-Queries Using Qualitative Preferences

When similarity queries over multimedia databases are processed by splitting the overall query condition into a set of sub-queries, the problem of how to efficiently and effectively integrate the sub-queries’ results arises. The common approach is to use a (monotone) scoring function, like min and average, to compute an overall similarity score by aggregating the partial scores an object obtain...
